REGIS FORUM Organizational leaders around the world address questions of concern to all.
The devaluation of global currencies has created a need for most leaders to rethink the core of their activities. In response, the The Regis Group has instituted a Forum to explore the issues and potential solutions.
The Opening Question, followed by the initial set of answers, is:
"What is the most important question to be considered by businesses and community leaders today?"
"Reputation, image, and brand value. Those are the three things about which business executives should be concerned. Calls for more transparency, elimination of complex legalese in consumer targeted contracts and the failure of regulatory bodies to protect the public from predatory marketers have all scored direct hits to trust in corporations. Rebuilding reputations could take years. Some damaged firms have taken a shortcut, changed their names and opted for rebranding rather than working to resurrect limping images. Now is not the time to attempt a more than obvious maneuver around potential customers. It is time to revisit company goals, values and strengths, be direct with the public, continue support of communities and move forward."
- Donna Latson Gittens, Founder and Principal, causemedia, inc.
"The most important questions is one that defines who they [business and community leaders] are and where they feel, with confidence, they are positioned overall. In a tough economy, I expect that the overall community is looking for stabile, sustainable partners who have a track record of dependability and integrity. By asking and establishing ones corporate and community self, we broadcast who we are and where we belong or fit."
- Douglas J. Pisano PhD, RPh, Dean, School of Pharmacy, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
"Is our corporate, municipal or political goal a realistic attempt to serve the greater number of individuals, and, are we setting aside the agendas and benefits of a few to serve as many as possible? Business and community leaders are challenged with setting aside personal and political agendas, staying focused on why they were promoted or elected to a position of trust and confidence, and charged with stewardship of that privilege in terms of responsibility"
- Dan Bukkhegyi, First Vice President, Financial Advisor, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney
"How can we build and sustain a truly global economy that allows for progress and development--especially in nations and parts of the world that have not fully shared in past progress--but which also protects the planet's fragile environment? Tapping the creative energy of democracy and free enterprise, we must move beyond traditional divisions between "have and have not" nations and peoples towards a more sophisticated model that takes better account of long-term environmental, social, cultural and political consequences and goals."
- Steven G. Poskanzer, President, SUNY New Paltz College
"Do you know that you are living through a paradigm change, and are you leading into it? All indications show that the next generation is rebuilding our world towards greater investment in experiences and away from things, toward thinking in terms of global citizenship, and toward a creativity-based (as opposed to knowledge-based) economy. What narrative will help our communities and our companies understand the implications of this huge shift, and what opportunities are there for those who “get it?”"
- Kurt Daw, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Creative Arts, San Francisco State University
"The most important question for me (and one that I have major concerns about especially related to health care) is: How will the U.S. provide the necessary services to "Baby Boomers" who represent a huge portion of our population with growing needs who now must "rely" on an "insufficient workforce" of people in subsequent generations?"
- Charlene Connolly Ed.D., R.N., Executive Vice President, International University of Nursing , St. Kitts
"I think the most important question for business in the next few years to come will be centered around the issue of transparency. Spurred by rising frustration over recent events in the financial world, and coupled with new technology in the communications field, shareholders, employees, and members of the general public expect a much higher degree of openness from the corporate world. A common feature of many of the most admired companies in the world is their willingness and ability to share important information openly and honestly. It will be interesting to see how the business community at large adapts to this trend."
- Anand Chopra Mc Gowan, Director of Development, The Ad Club of Boston
"How can we shift operational focus to a long term perspective and away from the short term? Short term thinking has been a major factor in the decline of our economy and the catastrophic fall of our automotive industry. We need to transcend quarterly profit targets and start measuring success by parameters that reflect smart and insightful long term planning."
- Ed Wax, Chairman Emeritus of Saatchi & Saatchi
"To answer your questions which I like and have done a lot of thinking about as a professional planner during the last year. Eliminate dependence on oil because money leaves USA, and generate employment in USA. That is, that when a local corporation leaves to another country it must in some way not affect employment. If it does it should not be permitted to relocate, it can expand in another country. All this is to help retain national treasure. In a nut shell: don’t export the dollar and let it circulate in the USA for a multiplication effect."
- Jose Robles, CEO, QIO of Puerto Rico
"I believe the most important question to be considered by business and community leaders today is what operational, funding or staffing changes has a business/community implemented, or plan to implement soon, to address the many challenges of a recessionary business environment that has not yet hit bottom. Each business leader must look at how s/he is changing the way they do business to meet the technological and social networking demands of their clients/members. What steps do you need to take now to ensure that your business will survive to 2010 and beyond."
- Steve Haracznak, Executive Director, Society for Vascular Ultrasound
"How to tap into the socializing of the internet , via micro blogging, to improve the life of everybody….and to create new business models on the back of internet 2.0…and internet 3.0"
- Mike Donahue, EVP-American Association of Advertising Agencies
"Two separate answers. For business, the basic answer is: Am I making enough money to continue? For community leaders: Am I doing the job I was Hired/Voted/Volunteered to do?"
- Morty Dubin, AV Consultant, Chairperson Emeritus and founder of the New York Production Alliance. (N.Y.P.A.)
"How do I make a living allocating my time between business, family, and yet be an active, ethical, involved citizen at the same time."
- Jack Maraffi, CEO-Travel Savers International-Global Affiliation of Travel Agents
"How do we adequately and equitably fund public services in inflationary times with a declining population? Leaders in every country face this question as the economy changes and stable sources of income leave or shrink either as part of a cycle or permanently."
- Gerald Mohr, Executive Director of the Indiana Association of School Principals
"I don’t think that the most important questions for leaders really change over time. How does one promote change? How does one inspire the others in the organization to share a vision of a changed future and then work to achieve that vision? Leadership requires vision, trust, integrity and initiative."
- David Prince, Professor of Law, William Mitchell College of Law
"The answer to the question posed is in my mind simple and has to do with “Motivation” How is it created, enhanced and channeled? With our current problems we are witnessing changes everywhere. Are the answers going to solve the problems? Will the future be served?"
- Lawrence Shapiro M.D., President and Chairman, Health Services Advisory Group, Inc.
